Breaking Free from Spinal Arthritis: Why You Shouldn't Just "Live With It"

Drs. Jessica and JaGerran Knight-Bryant Season 1

Millions struggle with the pain and limitations of spinal arthritis, often resigned to a life of discomfort after hearing "it's just arthritis" or "you'll have to live with it." This episode shatters those misconceptions, offering real hope and practical solutions for those battling neck and low back arthritis.

Dr. Knight Bryant explains what's actually happening when osteoarthritis develops in your spine—the breakdown of joint cartilage leading to inflammation, stiffness, and pain. You'll discover why arthritis doesn't appear overnight but results from years of poor posture, old injuries, and lack of proper movement. More importantly, you'll learn why ignoring those morning aches, painful movements, and grinding sensations allows the condition to progress exponentially.

The heart of this episode reveals how chiropractic care addresses spinal arthritis fundamentally differently than conventional treatments. Rather than masking symptoms, chiropractic adjustments improve joint mobility, reduce nerve pressure, and slow the degenerative process through proper movement. Dr. Bryant shares compelling research showing how regular chiropractic care significantly improves pain and mobility while reducing medication dependence. You'll hear a real patient success story of someone who transformed their arthritic condition through consistent care over four years.

Remember—your spine is your lifeline, connecting your brain to every cell in your body. When you care for it consistently, not just during pain crises, you're investing in your overall health and mobility for life. Speaker 1:

Hey, what's up you guys? It's Dr Knight Bryant here with Mustard Seed Chiropractic on Simply Health and Wellness. Welcome back to the podcast, friends. I'm so glad you're tuning in today because we're diving into something that affects millions of people but it's often misunderstood, and that's arthritis in the neck and low back. If you or someone you love has been told it's just arthritis, love, has been told, is just arthritis, or if you felt that stiffness and discomfort that creeps up with age and past injuries, then you need to be staying with me on this episode. There is hope and there are solutions. Today I'm going to break down what is arthritis in the spine, why it develops and how chiropractic care can be a powerful tool not just to relieve the symptoms but also to stop the progression in its tracks. So let's go ahead and dive right into it.

Speaker 1:

What is spinal arthritis? Spinal arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis you might hear it as OA is a degenerative condition. It happens when the cartilage that cushions the joints it starts to break down. That leads to inflammation, stiffness and pain inside of your actual joints. Now it's common in two areas the neck or the cervical spine and the low back or the lumbar spine. Now here is the key Arthritis usually doesn't start overnight, you guys. It often is a result of years of poor posture, old injuries, lack of motion and repetitive strain and even stress on the actual spine. And once it starts, if left unmanaged, it tends to get worse and worse over time, exponentially Notice that last word, exponentially. So the symptoms you shouldn't ignore. If you've ever felt that stiffness in the morning and it takes time to loosen up, If you feel pain when you're turning your head or you're getting out the chair, you feel this grinding or this popping sound in your neck or your back, or you have this numbness and tingling from nerve pressure, these all could be signs that arthritis is starting to affect your spine. And here's the truth ignoring it will not make you go away. You have to address the issue, and the reality is that there's plenty of good news concerning this and how chiropractic care can actually help.

Speaker 1:

Chiropractic is not about masking the pain, which is so important to understand in this case. Many times, a medication or an injection, you're really not changing mechanically what's happening in that joint, and so what we always say is if you want to restore function and alignment so that body can heal itself, you need chiropractic. And when it comes to spinal arthritis, chiropractic adjustments can help by literally improving the joint mobility and motion, reducing the inflammation and pressure on the nerves, slowing down the degenerative process by keeping your spine moving properly, Because people have to remember, as we've talked about in other episodes, movement is medicine for the spine. Here's the beautiful part when the, when you restore that motion, you also begin to restore hope. That's right, a characteristic rather than actual mechanism in the body. Hope is so important. I think about it like proverbs 17 22 a cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. This verse reminds me and my team that healing isn't just physical, it's emotional and it's spiritual too. Chiropractic care empowers people to basically bounce back and take control of their health and feel hopeful again. So let's dive into some research as well.

Speaker 1:

A growing body of research supports the role of chiropractic care in managing spinal arthritis. One study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments significantly improve pain and mobility in patients with spinal arthritis. Other studies show that regular chiropractic care helps reduce reliance on medication, improves posture and flexibility and increases activity levels all crucial for slowing down arthritis. So the real reality here, though, is that consistency is key. If there's one thing I want you to take away from today is this Do not wait for the pain to get worse. I need you, your spine needs you, your nervous system needs you, your friends, your job, your coworkers, your community, your family needs you to be proactive, not reactive. Chiropractic care is most effective when it is consistent.

Speaker 1:

Okay, Not just some quick fix. When you're in a crisis, Think of it like brushing your teeth. You would not wait to brush your teeth when your teeth begin to hurt, Right. The same thing goes for your spine. Success is in the sum of the small efforts. So these repeated, day in, day out details that we do, you will start to notice a huge difference when you remain consistent. When you remain consistent. One adjustment won't cure arthritis, but a series of small, consistent steps and adjustments can create big changes in your quality of life, and I want to remind everyone listening to this podcast.

Speaker 1:

I got inspired, actually, from a patient receiving chiropractic care here. She's been under care for over four years with me as a patient met her with severe arthritis and we've been able to keep this thing at bay. In fact, now she has mobility like crazy and she's a big fan of just telling people about chiropractic, and so I just want to remind her. She wants to remind you guys and other people you have the power to change your story. Okay, the person listening to me that's never been to the chiropractor. You might have discrepancies. You might have had some past moments where you're not sure if you really want to try it. I want to remind you that you have the power to change everything in your story.

Speaker 1:

If you've been told you just have to live with it. I want you to know there is a better way, and it doesn't mean you got to pop pills, do a shot for it or anything like that. Chiropractic offers this path of natural, drug free and focused on restoring your body's ability to function and thrive a pathway for you. There's a there's an actual journey you can take that doesn't require just masking the symptoms. And no, we will not be able to reverse arthritis completely. In fact, if a chiropractor tells you that or anyone tells you that they can reverse arthritis, it will be false. It's not the truth and you would run away from them, hopefully at 200 miles per hour, because it's just not the case. But we can slow it down drastically and we can ease the pain and we can help you move better and we can help you feel better and hopefully help you live a pain-free life. So here's my call to action for you If you're struggling with this neck and low back pain, if you've been told it's just arthritis again, don't wait.

Speaker 1:

Your nervous system controls every single cell, tissue and organ in your body, and when the nervous system is done, then we're no longer able to live our best lives.
