Pop Goes the Myth: What That Sound Really Means in Chiropractic
Fear keeps many potential patients from experiencing the life-changing benefits of chiropractic care. That fear often stems from a simple question: "Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?" Dr. Knight Bryant tackles this concern head-on, sharing the reality behind what happens during an adjustment and why that famous "popping" sound isn't what you think.
Drawing from experiences at Mustard Seed Chiropractic where they see nearly 100 patients daily, Dr. Knight explains the comprehensive assessment process using x-rays and neurothermal scanning technology that happens before any adjustment. He walks listeners through exactly what happens when you lie on the table, demystifying the adjustment process and explaining that the popping sound is merely gas releasing from joints—just like when you crack your knuckles.
The truth about post-adjustment sensations? Ninety percent of patients feel immediate relief, with only about five percent experiencing mild soreness similar to what you'd feel after a new workout. Dr. Knight shares his personal transformation through chiropractic care—how adjustments eliminated his lifelong tinnitus, vision issues, and excessive sweating, despite initially seeking care without any pain symptoms. This powerful testimony underscores how chiropractic benefits extend far beyond pain relief to improved sleep, digestion, and overall nervous system function. If you've been sitting in your car, afraid to walk into a chiropractic office, this episode will give you the confidence to take that step toward better health.
Ready to experience the benefits of chiropractic care without the fear? Share this episode with someone who might be nervous about their first adjustment—it could be the encouragement they need to transform their health.
What's up? You guys, dr Knight Bryant, here from Mustard Seed Chiropractic in beautiful Smyrna, georgia Today? We're bringing an episode to you today which I think you are going to love and I think it's going to go viral and I think it is going to be absolutely what people need to hear, which is the question you've been waiting for. Do adjustments hurt? This is Simply Health and Wellness. Let's dive right in. So, first thing, first, what happens before you even get adjusted with a chiropractor? Many times and every chiropractor is different, both in analysis at many times and the way that they deliver the adjustment. But one thing most chiropractors agree on completely is that we need to x-ray. We want to see exactly what's happening with the spine and don't feel bad.
Speaker 1:Many times before, even in mustard seed chiropractic, when we first opened, we did not have x-ray to start. We didn't even have the financial means to start with x-ray or the space. So if your chiropractor doesn't use x-ray, it's not the end of the world. They can send out for x-ray. They can use NeuroScan, they can use InsightScan, they can use SEMG. They can use all type of information to figure out where the bones are misaligned that's causing pressure on your nervous system. However, x-rays are a great way for us to rule out. A couple of details Is any bones broken in the spine? Is there any anomalies in your spine? And also, is there any abnormalities that we're seeing throughout the process of degeneration, things like that? And then sometimes we catch some things on x-ray that are really important, where we actually have to send out. So x-rays are important. This can happen before a chiropractic adjustment.
Speaker 1:Here at Mustard Seed Chiropractic we use a neurothermal scanning technology. This really helps us be really specific with our adjustments. It helps us communicate to patients not only what they're feeling, but why they're not functioning at their best. Because nerves travel to cells, tissues and organs. And if we're taking pressure off the water hose, if you will, if we're taking pressure off of the nerve, then the brain is going to communicate to the organs and allow those to heal, feel and function at optimal potential, and then, vice versa, the body will communicate back to the brain. It is a two way street. So we use this technology to really help our patients understand what's happening. We use it to help them track along and see what it's like to first start care and then, as they go along, how their nervous system continues to improve.
Speaker 1:But before we even get to that point, many times just like a patient who just left a recent Google review for us, just like a patient who just left a recent Google review for us People are just scared. I remember two years ago starting out, and there was a patient who called, called, called all day, was trying to get on the schedule, got on the schedule, had a lot of questions, answered the questions, but you could tell that everything for this patient was just they were. They were scared of the adjustment, although they it's most likely what they needed because they tried everything else. They had tried everything, but they were just terrified of the chiropractic adjustment. And the day went along and they were scheduled for nine or so early in the morning, did not show up that day and I remember going home and kind of talking with Dr Jessica and saying, man, that was bad. Like this person probably needed a great adjustment. We know we are gentle, specific and excellent with care, but they could not even find the gump to walk into the office, and so it helped me understand people are not only scared, they're terrified many times of the adjustment.
Speaker 1:However, what I think is really helpful is what we see here at Mustard Seed Chiropractic now, which is once that trust is built up, once a patient can walk in and they've never, ever, ever been to a chiropractor before. At our clinic, our experience is that people love. These are the people that love chiropractic the most because what they're thinking in their brains is there's some kind of rotational force is taking place and we're turning their neck 180 degrees in a crazy direction, and that it's going to cause dramatic impairment or dysfunction to the body. We adjust tense. Almost almost 100 people a day must receive chiropractic and we do not have injuries to the spine, thank God, which is amazing. But we continue to do excellent work and a recent Google review really helps me explain this. One patient recently said hey, not only did I have a great experience here, I've never been to a chiropractor before. I was, in her words, nervous, Right, and we're dealing with the nervous system. I was nervous, but the staff Dr G was extremely welcoming, kind and they talked me through every step to calm my nerves. I had a great adjustment.
Speaker 1:So these are the details that I want you to know. If you're that person that is just freaked out from the chiropractic adjustment, you want to know what that popping sound is. You want to know what's occurring? This is the episode for you. Sit back, relax, let's talk through it and hopefully we get a chance to see you here in the clinic. What is happening during a chiropractic adjustment?
Speaker 1:Many times we're going to use a technique to treat a unique need that your spine and nervous system may have. So I'm going to try to walk you through what a common experience could be. It could be different for every chiropractic doc, it could be different for every clinic, but I want to walk you through it. You're going to lie face down on the chiropractic table. Certain parts of your body are going to hit certain areas of the table that could lift up or they could drop down, okay, and what this just means is that the chiropractor is going to use these different drops where they're going to use these different tables to help assess and figure out exactly what's going on and it actually correct it right. And so we're gonna apply certain pressure to a specific area of your spine so we may use our hands. In many cases, there might even be a small instrument used and this is going to apply a quick, controlled, scientific, specific adjustment and amount of pressure to a joint In the purpose of opening up the nerve hole, in the purpose of taking pressure off your nervous system, in the purpose of removing Drum roll please.
Speaker 1:A subluxation, that means a misalignment in the spine that is not allowing your brain to communicate to the body. We call it an interference. We're there to remove the interference. Now this will require this gentle stretching of the joint, if you will, beyond its normal range. So we're going just above the range of motion, but not so far that we actually hurt tissues, if you will, ok. And this is going to help realign the vertebrae in your spine, which will open up nerve holes, take pressure off of the body.
Speaker 1:But then in many cases, especially in the beginning of care, you might hear a this popping sound, right? So, doc, what is this popping sound that we hear during the chiropractic adjustment? Now, it's very simple, and I tell this to the patients all the time the popping sound does not mean you have been adjusted. The popping sound simply means that the joint has opened in a way that gas has released from the joint. That is it. You can pop a joint. Your grandma could probably pop a joint. You hear joints popping regardless. Joints just pop. There's no big deal in the pop. What's important is that we are applying a pressure and a controlled force in a way that is releasing pressure off of your nervous system and the side benefit sometimes the sound, the effect from the adjustment can be a popping sound. Now, that popping sound is literally oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide releasing from the joint. That's it. So, literally, if you try to pop your knuckles right now, you might hear a popping sound coming from those knuckles. That is what it feels like to be adjusted. That is what it can sound like whenever something is open, when the joint is opened up. That is it. These, this gas gets trapped into these small cavities of your joints whenever you move or whenever you stretch or whenever you get adjusted, and the gas release is not what we are looking for. The gas release is just a part of the experience you may hear and it's example is whenever you actually crack your knuckles. Okay, so let's get straight to it.
Speaker 1:Should and do chiropractic adjustments hurt? Very simple you should not feel severe pain after a chiropractic adjustment, depending on the type of condition you're walking in with. Let's say you have a really tight, spasming muscle. I'm going to be honest, it's not going to feel amazing, but right after you may feel a little bit of soreness. The soreness you may experience is simple for most patients and I use this analogy and it's really simple and hopefully you get this.
Speaker 1:When you're working out and you go to a trainer for the first time, the first couple workouts you should feel soreness. Soreness is common after tissues have been changed. Soreness tells us that changes are happening, but you should not feel more pain than you walked in with from leaving from the chiropractic office. It's just not the normal experience. If so, reach back out to your doc, ask to do another re-exam, ask for them to recheck, make sure you drink water, make sure you stretch, make sure you move, but you should not feel more pain. It's just not the normal experience. At least here at Mustard Seed we don't have that experience.
Speaker 1:What we tend to find out is that a patient can feel a little bit of soreness. When they do feel that soreness, I'm actually cheering in the background because that lets me know that some big changes are going to take place, in the same way of when you work out for the first time with a new trainer. You hadn't moved like that before. You should feel a difference and that lets you know, something new is taking place within the body. However, a couple adjustments and a couple sessions in, do you continue to feel that type of soreness? The answer is no. You tend to feel great. So 90 percent of our patients 90 percent walk out saying I feel much better than I did before I walked in. Five may say I actually felt nothing, no big difference right there. Don't feel better, don't feel worse. By the way, that's how I felt after my first adjustment.
Speaker 1:Yet I'm a chiropractor and I had an amazing experience where I was life changing because my function changed. I didn't have pain when I walked into the chiropractic office. I walked in because my mom forced me to Next thing. You know, I started getting adjusted. Two weeks later, I started recognizing there were no more black dots in my eye, that I saw my whole life. I no longer heard ringing in my ear, which is called tinnitus. I no longer had this sweat pellets over my forehead and over my stomach. When I rotated my head to the left all because of my Sympathetic nervous system was an overload response from a bone being out of place. Chiropractor addressed it, corrected it. Two weeks later, no longer had that experience. That showed me that the adjustment was much bigger than just pain. It was about functionality and that's how we approach our patients here at muster C chiropractic.
Speaker 1:And so I want you to feel confident to know do adjustments hurt? Um, are we just looking for a big pop and a cracking sound in the body? No, that is not what chiropractic is about. That's not even what we're looking for. We are looking to see bones go into place. We do like to see proper alignment and we want to see bodies function and we want to see the nerve pressure come off the nervous system, because we know, when the pressure comes off the nervous system, that person, that patient is going to function on a different level. We know that the digestive system is going to function well. We know that they're gonna sleep much better. We know the headaches and migraines dissipate almost down to zero after a chiropractic adjustment. We start seeing the body heal, feel and function the way it was designed to, and we all see it from natural, holistic, hands-on chiropractic approaches.
Speaker 1:Come and see a doctor of chiropractic. The one cool thing I love about chiropractic is this you may walk in, have an experience for five to seven minutes, lay face down on the table, see the doctor directly that day with a hands-on experience. They're going to document what they did that day. You're going to walk out within 10 to 15 minutes and feel much better than you did before you walked in, and I think that is a very unique, excellent, beautiful experience in a chiropractic office that cannot be mimicked anywhere on earth. Chiropractic is awesome. If you are nervous about the popping sound, don't be, come talk to me.
Speaker 1:Hopefully this episode helps you out. But also know that there is much more side benefits to chiropractic than there is side effects, and one of the side effects are simply a little bit of soreness 10% of patients. But, man, do we see results each and every day here in our clinic? Will you see results in your life? The answer is yes, and you actually don't have to be in pain in order to see a chiropractor. I hope that this episode was helpful. I hope you have a beautiful and amazing day.
Speaker 1:Feel free to reach out to us here at Mustard Seed Chiropractic and please share this episode if it's been helpful for you, because there's probably someone that will be sitting in their car, like your lady was six months ago here in our clinic waiting to see should I come in. I was scheduled at nine or so in the morning. Should I come in? Should I come in? Should I come in? Walks in at 5 pm, gets her chiropractic adjustment. Walks out about 5.30 and says oh my goodness, I don't know what I was sitting out there in the parking lot waiting for. I feel better than I have my entire life. Dr Jagarin Knight Bryant here.
